Riga - an incredible surprise!

Wondering through the old town, amazing views from St. Peters Church & sailing on the Riga canal and the Daugava river.

Husband suggested we go to the Baltics!! My initial reaction was why? What's there? Why not Italy? (I am Italy-obsessed). But husband was adamant not to travel to Italy this time and I knew not to argue. So we booked for Riga for one week. I had absolutely zero expectations.

Firstly, we travelled in July. We were delighted to discover that in the summer months there is virtually no darkness. Even at 11.00pm, it feels like the afternoon.... amazing! Brilliant for the photo snapping traveller!

I was really taken with Riga, especially the Old Town. The old town is the historical, cultural & gastonomical center of the Latvian capital. Just allow yourself get lost in the cobble-stone streets, looking up at the abundance of architectural gems and when your feet get tired, resting in one of the trendy cafes or restaurants.

Just make sure you always look up in the Old Town of Riga

This isn't Holland... it's Riga Old Town!!

We spent our first full day just getting lost in the Old Town, snapping a million photos of the medieval buildings and narrow streets, and I am wondering to myself why we have never even heard people talk about this amazing city.

Amazing architecture everywhere...

Our second attraction for the day was visiting St Peters Church in the Old Town, one of the oldest and most beautiful gothic churches in Latvia. It dominates Riga’s skyline as the tallest spire in the capital. We took the lift to the top of the tower and stepped out onto the outdoor viewing platform providing magnificent views over the city. Thank goodness, we had our coats with us as it was quite chilly at the top.

We also stumbled upon a canal running through this lovely town ! Our legs were rather tired so we hopped on a boat and enjoyed the one hour ride of the Riga canal and the Daugava river.

Sailing the Riga Canal...

Interestingly, even in the summer months, Riga is quite cool. Sometimes we wore short sleeves but often we were walking around in our Uniqlo jackets. The restaurants at night (still day light) also provide blankets if you decide to sit outside (which we always did).

In order to sleep, we closed our blinds as even at midnight it was still bright as day!!! We slept though... we were exhausted..

Tomorrow we will go to the New Town of Riga... stay tuned...
