Cinque Terre - Train strike!! Boat trip to Portovenere

Updated: Aug 25, 2018

A boat trip to Portovenere and Lovely Levanto

For our second day in Cinque Terre, we had another beautiful hike planned between Vernazza and Corniglia. However, Italy had other plans for us! The owners of the small hotel told us while we were eating breakfast that the trains in Italy were on strike. For how long? Anyone's guess!!! Since the trains were striking, there was no convenient way to get to Vernazza to start our planned hike. So we had to change our plans!!!

So we swapped planned days, and instead took the two hour boat trip to Portovenere. It was a spectacular ride as you get the views of Cinque Terre from the sea (and can get the scenery without the hard work of hiking!).

Sailing by boat is another great way to visit Cinque Terre and the other nearby towns!

Portovenere is a gorgeous town as well. It is famous for its beautiful places: old castle, houses, churches and numerous caves. Plenty of gorgeous places to walk to and picture perfect places to just sit & sigh... and think about how wonderful life really is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We walked around for about three hours, ate delicious foccacia bread and Italian gelati.

Beautiful caves and water grottos of Portovenere

Pretty Portovenere and its grand castle above

On our way to the castle in Portovenere

We made sure we checked the boat schedule and started our return boat trip at around 15.30. It was overall a gorgeous day!

Enjoy!
